Chemical Peels Less CardioToxic Than Previously Thought
Deep chemical peels are a dermatological procedure used to reduce the appearance of sun damage, wrinkles, acne scars, and, also, have been used to remove precancerous skin lesions.
Deep peels have always had a potential to cause damage to the heart, and [tag-tec]cardiac arrhythmias[/tag-tec] are often seen in patients undergoing this procedure.
However, a new study finds that impact of cardiac implications may be less than previously believed.
This study examined 181 female patients who received deep full-face [tag-tec]chemical peels[/tag-tec] between December 1, 2004 and November 30, 2005. Each of these patients underwent the chemical peel procedure while being monitored by sophisticated cardiac equipment.
The findings were promising. About 7% of patients exhibited cardiac arrhythmia during the procedure, and this was more common in patients who had pre-existing conditions of diabetes, hypertension, and depression.
Of the 12 patients who experienced these symptoms, 4 were able to bring their heart rates back to regularity, while the other 8 required lidocaine injections to regulate their heart beat.
The researchers indicated that the heart problems associated with chemical peels are lower than previously believed.
As with any medical procedure, be sure your doctor knows your full medical history prior to the treatment.
