Laser Treatments for Scars

There are two main types of laser treatments for scars.

One is the pulsed dye (vascular) laser, which works by decreasing the amount of blood flow into the scar, and by decreasing the amount of collagen that deposits at the site of the injury. This, in turn, will improve the appearance of the [tag-ice]scar[/tag-ice] and may quicken healing time. This type of laser has been used with some sucess to treat acne scars, especially ones which are still red and raised.

The second type of laser treatment for scars is the Fraxel laser, which accomplishes fractional resurfacing.

What this means, essentially, is that the skin is treated in small columns or zones. The Fraxel laser is so precise that it can treat all the way down to the deepest layer of the skin without causing damage.

This treatment has been FDA cleared for the treatment of age spots, deep wrinkles, sun damage, and scars. The Fraxel laser can be guided to treat only specific areas of the face or body, meaning that the overall trauma and damage is much less compared to previous forms of laser treatment.

The result is healthier looking skin, from the base level all the way up.
